The Boy Who Talked to Badgers

One day, as my sons were playing video games in the basement with Big Dragon. I had Disney + to myself and decided to scroll through the many titles.

One title caught my attention, "The Boy Who Talked to Badgers". How can in the name of all that's holy, this be a children's movie? And boy did it NOT disappoint.

Filmed in 1975, but set in the old frontier (early 1900s) this Disney, forgotten action movie was one of the many racist, poorly acted and blatantly cruel to animals that came out in that decade. And this was 30 years after the animated, always offensive, Song of the South. In The Boy Who Talked to Badgers, right near the end of the movie there is a scene where a dog literally fights a badger.

The landscape of the prairies, dry river valley and rolling hills looked very familiar. After a quick google search I found out that the movie was filmed in Southern Alberta. How were my older siblings not cast as extras in this? There were a lot of judgey church lady characters in the film which I am sure they didn't have a problem finding in Canada's Bible belt. And of course, a few First Nation actors having to speak monotone and given very simple lines, as it isn't until recently that First Nation people were portrayed as intelligent and complicated characters.

This movie is so bad. The acting. The Storyline. The animals. I was laugh-crying throughout it. Highly recommend to watch by yourself, late at night or with your children as a example of everything you should never do with vicious wildlife.
