Hiking
One of the things that bring me the most joy in life is hiking. Anyone who really knows me, knows this about me. Perhaps it was because I grew up in a household with four older brothers who had this obsession and I wanted to fit in and be their equals. I probably didn't have much of a choice.
My oldest brother, Adam, is probably the most obsessed. He and his buddies would bag 1,2,3 sometimes even four peaks in one day. They started a thing every summer, that they called "The Mountain Challenge". It was basically between two families, the Hornberger family and the other, equally crazy, Walters family. They would agree on a mountain range in Waterton National Park and then time from start to finish how long it took to hike to the top of the peaks and then back to their respective vehicles.
There were times they got lost, times they experienced being caught in a storm and times of encountering wildlife- both first hand and with a car. But for the most part, these great challenges were met with enthusiasm and optimism without dangers falling upon the hikers.
Hiking is a need that makes my soul happy when fulfilled and I hope to pass this obsession on to my boys.
