If It Bleeds,' by Stephen King book review - The Washington Post

Exploring Different Genres

Over the past few years I typically tend to read books that are historical fiction, biographies, or true crime. Since COVID-19 as run rampant across the globe, I decided, life is short, let's explore some other genres that are critically acclaimed titles or authors and see what they are all about.

In March, I finished the first book of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It was clever and great escapism from the present loom and doom situation.

This past month, I am in the middle of reading If It Bleeds by Stephen King. I've never read any of his works before, but I am familiar of quite a number of them through reputation and motion pictures based on them. Heck, we even saw the theatrical adaptation of Misery ten years ago at the Roxy theater in Edmonton.

***Fun Fact: King has the same birth-date, even the year, as my dad.

If It Bleeds contains four short stories. The first wasn't very scary at all. The second, I liked a bit more than the first, but once again, not very scary in like a graphic way, just super eerie. And I am more than half way finished the 3rd. I think I know where it's going as there are a lot of not so subtle hints, we will have to wait and see where he ends up taking me.

Between hearing about COVID cases dying alone, in a hospital, slowly drowning to death and peaceful protestors in the US being forced into a stranger's houses, forcefully, by police and having tear gas thrown at them, it just makes horror fiction seem... well, less scary.
