The Benefits of Cross-Country Skiing
It was late October; the local ski swap shop was abuzz. There was even a news van with reporter and camera person in tow to capture the excitement.
The line-up of customers went around the building and down the street. Why? These were all people thinking the same. Survive the winter, get some used cross-country skis for their families and maybe burn some calories along the way.
I, fortunately, already had my own cross-country skis and grew up skiing with my family.
With the pandemic closing gyms, recreational sports on hold, and swimming pools inaccessible, the general public emptied whole stores to gear up for a winter sport that didn't involve booking a spot, wearing a mask, or relying on an indoor facility.
There are many benefits to cross-country skiing like:
1) Exercise- Let's be real, cross-country skiing is one of the closest things to hiking in the winter, but unlike it's cousin the snowshoes, you can gain some serious speed when you get the hang of things. And let's not forget the fun of zooming down the hills, something that bulky snowshoes can never copy/achieve/comprehend. Like most sports, be patient with yourself if it's your first time. When we were first married I introduced this winter sport to my husband and the first few times he was like Bambi learning to walk, tripping over his skis every few minutes. Fast forward to a decade of skiing together and he is now faster than myself. Burning calories and boosting your happy, endorphin chemicals at the same time.
2) Connecting with Nature- Being outdoors has it's many benefits. Physically, emotionally, and some would argue, even spiritually. Skiing through the forest, fields and valleys participants get to witness wildlife in their natural habitats. We have had many discussions with our sons about which animal belongs to the tracks in the snow. We identify birds, trees and my young sons favorite, droppings!
3) Quality time with the whole family- Skiing together, although it can be frustrating at times because of complaints or differing speeds, is one of those activities that I am always glad we did together when it's all said and done. Many times I have found my six year old singing made-up songs as he is zooming down the hill, not sure if it's out of excitement or fear or perhaps a combination of the two intense emotions. My eight-year old talks my ear off the whole time, sometimes his topics are deeply philosophical and other times about the latest video game. Free therapy?
Research your city and town; you will be surprised to learn that many golf courses and parks have groomed trails, either by machines or carved by foot by ski enthusiasts. If you can't find any, you can always make your own path.
If you had trouble finding skis this season, keep on the lookout for some that others tired of and use them for next winter. Cross-country skiing is a sport that is for all ages; and the benefits are fantastic!
