Taking Comfort in the Old

During the pandemic, I have become increasingly nostalgic. Not just in the way of looking at movies, filmed before the global virus spread, where there are classrooms full of people, where people eat off of other people's plates, and even touch other strangers . . . So  bizarre!

I have found that I am turning to old, almost forgotten music, movies, and recipes. Rediscovering traditions that might have been overlooked become more cherished than ever. And, since the 90's are coming back in fashion, nostalgia might as well go full-force.

I have eight year old and six year old sons and in the past few months, when times have felt emotionally heavy, have felt the need to introduce them to more silliness.

Before YouTube toy reviews, TikTok fails, and cringey memes, kids used to hang out in their rooms and listen to cassette tapes.

It was time to acquaint my offspring to the king of parodies: His Royal Silliness, Weird Al Yankovich. After a few songs, they were all in. I was a proud mom.

As a family, we have watched "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids", which, even decades later, still holds up. I also have baked my favorite Sunday night treat of my childhood: chocolate volcano cake.

When we aren't sure what tomorrow has in store, it is from the memories and comforts from our own childhoods, those wrapped in love and yes, even silliness that get us through the toughest of times.
