Volunteering

In the age of COVID-19, now is a better time than ever to find a great fit with a non-for-profit organization. There are so many in want, with so many groups out there, that one method of service is bound to resonate with you.

If you love to read, join up with your local library. If you love drama, then serve a community theater . If gardening is in your blood, connect with a community garden initiative or agriculture society. Do you like animals? Help out an animal rescue shelter.  I think you get the idea. Perhaps, start by writing down three things you care about and go from there.

Groups are still meeting virtually to devise creative ways to fund-raise and reach out to the community about up-coming projects. I have witnessed on-line 50/50 fundraisers collect record breaking revenues, watched for a radio-reading of a theater production for a small price and observed Rotary groups turn to video cameras to recreate the annual dinner theater production, traditionally used to fund local endeavors.

When I started to volunteer, I noticed a trend; the same faces were at the table for multiple groups. Many were happy and excited to recruit a new member. According to the old adage -many hands make work light- rings true with volunteering. All organizations can use a helping hand, even if you feel you can't commit loads of hours. Many organizations truly appreciate a new face at the table with a fresh perspective. You need not prolong a volunteer opportunity to retirement.

By joining a non-for-profit organization it presents a fantastic opportunity to find your place in the community and, who knows, maybe you will meet a new friend.

Help out with fundraisers and have your voice heard at decisions on how the funds raised are spent. It's an empowering feeling to say the least.

Volunteering helps to build a resume and can lead to prospective job opportunities in the future. In this time of uncertainty, doom-scrolling, and social isolation, give yourself a happiness boost by being part of a greater good. Make a meaningful difference and volunteer.
